SOLD - "The Odd Couple" - 8 x 16"
SOLD
This is what I love the most about Still Life painting - the chance for me to tell a little story. In this case, I'm adding my own social commentary using Lemons and Limes, but the viewer can interpret this scene any which way they'd like. Are they an interracial or gay couple? An older gentleman with a younger woman? And which one of these IS the "odd couple", anyway? You decide!

California paintings
We had the luxury of spending the holidays in sunny California this year, which was a nice change from the cold, white north!
During our stay, we managed a quick trip along the coast, also known as the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). It's really one of my most favorites places, second after Ireland. I love the huge hills and valleys, and the vast changes between desert and rocky coastlines.
We had also been there about a decade earlier, and after looking through my plethora of photos for inspiration, I settled on these two to paint:
I don't paint Landscapes very often, but I had a great time working on these. I hope to paint more of them in the near future (I still have lots of photos to go through!).

SOLD - "Living on the Edge" - 14 x 18"
As promised, I'll be posting some of my latest works that hadn't yet made it to my blog. Here's one of them, titled "Living on the Edge".
SOLD
I started this painting last summer; it was the piece I was working on during a local Art Show, and had really struggled to finish it that weekend. I love going to this show... it's outdoors, and you get to meet your collectors face-to-face, which is always great! Plus, we usually set up our easels and paint while folks are admiring and shopping... something I always find interesting myself when I go to shows. I love seeing how each artist works.
However for me, being the social butterfly that I am, I almost never get to paint during these events because I'm too busy talking to everyone! And this is one of those paintings... started, but never finished. I finally brought it back to my studio and managed to finish it months later. And I'm so pleased with the final result!
The original photo (taken by my husband during a past trip to Tijuana, Mexico) was very dull and lifeless. I love bringing my sense of color to such drab scenes. That's where us artists really get to be artists :)

It's been a while...
It's been a very, very busy last couple of months, to say the least. Which explains the lack of updates on my blog! With the launch of my brand new website (finally, after 10+ years!), lots of interesting work projects, and the holidays (spent in sunny California!), it's no wonder I haven't been here much.
But it's a new year, filled with new goals! One of them, not surprisingly, is to paint more. Not only paint more, but paint better. I've semi-decided to start following the recent trend of "daily paintings". Now with my busy schedule, I don't see this happening (and no, I'm not a pessimist... just being realistic!). If I can manage to squeeze in a new (small) painting every 2 days or so, that would be a great start (I already stocked up on some small canvases during my last trip to Boston!)
Just go to Google and search for "daily painting" or "daily painter", and you'll no doubt find hundreds of artists out there doing this exact thing. What does Daily Painting do for an artist? The way I see it, it's a good way to hone your observation skills, and not worry about every single detail of a painting. My goal is to become a bit more "painterly" in my technique, and I feel like this would help get me started. My favorite daily painters, by the way... are Carol Marine, Michael Naples, and Qiang Huang, just to name a few. And it's really hard to just name a few :)
These small paintings are not meant to replace my usual work. And I have a number of new paintings which need to be added here - hopefully within the next few days. So keep an eye out!

Autumn Arts Competition on Facebook
When I first saw this Group on Facebook, there were only a few entries for the competition so I thought to myself "Hey, I might actually have a chance at this!" HA! Guess again! :)
If anything, it's allowed me to work on some new autumn-inspired paintings, which I hadn't done in quite some time. I also hadn't worked in Watercolors in a few years, so it was nice to get those brushes wet again (the competition was for ANY medium, but Watercolors are so much faster drying, it was easier for me to create multiple pieces).
I'm really excited about my participation in this Art Competition! At closing, I think there were 884 entries - which is huge!! And I'm still in complete awe at the talent displayed there... There is talk of continuing these challenges for different seasons and themes, so it'll be fun to see what we come up.

Above are my three entries for this competition. The winners should be announced soon (hopefully!), so wish me luck!! And here's a link to the Group on Facebook: First Annual Autumn Arts Painting Challenge and Competition on Facebook

SOLD - "Gossip Queen" - 12 x 12"
I've been busy working on a few projects this summer, and haven't been updating my blog as often as I'd like to! But here's a recent addition to my gallery, titled "Gossip Queen".

SOLD
I've been wanting to paint Raspberries for a long time, and wanted to paint it in a similar style as my "cherries" painting from a few months ago. I just loved the bright, juicy reds against a stark white background.
So outside I went to take some reference photos, and settled on this arrangement. The way the berries were placed, it looked as if the one on the right was whispering in the left one's ear. And the left one was making an "OMG" face - LOVED that! So that's where the title comes from - "Gossip Queen" :)

Rendez-Vous des Artistes 2009
For the past 6 years, a huge Art Show takes place in my hometown of St-Leonard, NB (Canada), called the "Rendez-Vous des Artistes". Since I've only recently moved back to the area, this was only my 2nd year participating in it. It's a huge outdoor art show/fair that brings together about 150 artists from all over Canada, United States, and even Belgium! What an amazing weekend it was!!!
The weather couldn't have been more perfect!! They had been predicting rain all weekend - and although it *did* rain, it was always in the evening once all the artists had packed up for the day. Call it luck, but I prefer to think that someone was watching over us!
The place was bustling with people of all ages, so many of them walking away with a few purchases. It was great to see so many people buying original art! So much for a down economy... I swear, the worse the economy gets, the more people tend to save whatever they have left to buy some artwork. It sure beats spending it on a pair of shoes... at least art doesn't go out of style :)
I was also one of those lucky artists who sold original pieces! In addition to lots of Giclee reproductions and greeting cards, I also sold 2 paintings: "Summer Drinks", a watercolor that won me 3rd place a few years back at a show, and "The Cherry Gang", one of my recent oils, favored by many! It's always exciting to sell an original piece, but when I get back home and hang what's remaining back on my walls, I can't help but feel a sense of loss... I get very attached to my work, as I'm sure most artists do!
Looking forward to next year's event already! :)

SOLD - "New Laces" - 18 x 14"

SOLD
Here's a new piece I've been working on for months, which I finally finished! I love the title "New Laces"... the ice skates are so old, but I really wanted to show the "newness" of the laces themselves. I snapped some photos while visiting a local Acadian Village (in Van Buren, ME) a few years back, and always had this one as my favorite. I couldn't wait to paint it!!

SOLD - "The Cherry Gang" - 16 x 8"

Here's my latest painting, "The Cherry Gang". I really loved painting this one. My goal for this painting was not to do it quickly, but rather try and focus on each brushstroke, and why it needed to be there. All too often, I get wrapped up in the tiny details. This time, I stood back and squinted, thinking before I applied paint to the canvas. I wanted it to remain fresh and loose. I was very happy with the final result! :)
This Original oil painting was sold during a recent Art Show.

Spring into Art!!
It's such an honor to be part of VAST (Visual Artists Street Team) at Etsy! It's a great feeling to be part of such a talented group of artists... and tonight, we'll be hosting our very first Trunk Show! This is so exciting! Here's a glimpse into what you might see tonight, in our Spring-related theme:

"Macro Cabbage", which is available as a Giclee reproduction in my shop, is one of my favorite paintings. I love painting vegetables, and it was fun to find the different colors in all that green! This painting also won me 2nd Place in a regional art show.

Another favorite is my "Swan Reflections", an ORIGINAL watercolor painting. I loved the peacefulness of this swan, wadding around in the famous Swan Pond in Boston, MA. In my shop, you can find both the Original painting, as well as a Giclee print of this one.
Hope to see everyone at the "Welcome Spring" trunk show tonight at 7pm (EST) in the Gallery Room. You can also browse my Etsy shop for even more wonderful art, in a wide range of prices.

"I Love Maine", ACEO Challenge
I don't typically get involved in these types of challenges, especially since I had never really done an ACEO** before. Since I try to support my favorite ETSY team as much as I can, I thought I'd give it a try. How FUN!!!! The challenge was to create one (1) ACEO with a “Maine” theme using recycled or upcycled materials. It did not have to be 100% recycled materials, but as much as possible.
Here's my entry, which it simply titled "I Love Maine". It's made entirely of found and recycled objects. I started with real Birch bark as the background, then created a pine tree using leftover silk flower petals. The blue fabric across the bottom depicts Maine's coastline, along with a few seashells. I then added a few autumn leaves stickers at the bottom, and a gold snowflake as the sun.

This was so much fun to make and assemble - I hope I've captured the full essence of what Maine means to me (lush forests, gorgeous coastlines, and the four seasons). You can read more about this challenge, which ends on February 26, 2009. Good luck to all the other participants! :)
** What is an ACEO you ask? A.C.E.O. stands for: Art Cards, Editions and Originals. An ACEO is "always" 2.5 x 3.5 inches in portrait or landscape orientation. Small collectable pieces of original art or a signed "Open" or "Limited" Edition reproduction print by the artist. Designed on the Artist Trading Cards (ATC) which are 'traded' ...ACEO's are for sale to collectors. They allow people all around the world to collect and sell art because of their affordability and that the miniature size provides ease of shipping.

"Beauty of the Heart" makes it to Etsy's Front Page!!

How excited was I when I saw one of my original collages on Etsy's front page!! It's so nice to see that... I had been featured a few times already, but never for my Art, so this was truly an honor!!

SOLD - "Play the Chessmaster" - 9 x 12"

Anyone who's visited Harvard Square (Cambridge, MA) in the summertime is undoubtedly familiar with the following scene. I snapped some photos a few years back, and always thought this one would make a great subject for a painting. This "chessmaster" has been immortalized in photos by many photographers, and now he's made it into one of my oil paintings!
This time, I also thought it would be nice to take photos of the painting-in-progress. Hopefully you enjoy this little slideshow!

Hangover? Grab some Egg and Toast...

What a happy discovery I made this morning when I saw my Egg and Toast painting appear on Etsy's main Blog article! This painting has always been a popular one, and I'm so glad that it also got the attention of the Etsy community! Thanks to their admins for putting it front and center!
You can purchase the original painting here in my Etsy shop. I'm also selling Giclee prints of this painting as well, which you can find here.

Autumn Shadows - 10 x 14"

Fall in New England is something else... there's no way to really describe it unless you've been there. Having lived in the northeast my entire life, we sometimes take this for granted. One day, as I was driving through some backcountry roads, I came across this scene - tall, colorful trees casting these long purple shadows in the road... it was so beautiful!!! I had to capture this in a painting. The photos here don't do it quite justice... the painting is much brighter in real life!
This painting can be purchased through my Etsy shop.

On the Etsy front page... again!!!

Alright... I guess three time's a charm! I was once again featured on the Etsy.com front page this week. How exciting!! And not surprisingly, it was one of my Birch products that got the attention.
Although my primary art takes shape in the form of Paintings, I am having a lot of fun experimenting with Birch lately. Of course none of it comes from living trees, but from piles of dead trees found in the woods behind my house. I never realized how much of a trend the look of Birch was these days... but seeing that the holidays are coming, I presume that lots of folks (like me) enjoy the rustic, warm feeling that they bring.
So once again, my work has caught the attention of Etsy Admins!! Gotta be happy about that, right! Now, if only some of my artwork can make it up there... ;)

Instructions on how to build your own outdoor art display panels
This past summer, I participated in my very first outdoor art show. Having scoured the web to find out how people set up their displays, I was a bit disappointed to see that there wasn't much information out there. So I more or less had to invent something (with the help of my wonderful husband, of course...). And hoping that it would come in handy for other artists, I took detailed pictures along the way, which brings me to this blog post!
I'll do my best to give clear instructions, but if you have any questions, feel free to use the Comments section! :)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
* A tent or canopy, preferably with walls, in case of inclement weather
* 2 x 4's for the basic construction

* Roll of "wire mesh" that I bought at the hardware store

* Large piece of stretchy black fabric (which you can buy at most "box stores")

* Plastic Washers (found in the Nails dept. of your hardware store)
* Curtain Hooks (Curtain dept. of any store)
* Wood screws (long ones for building your walls; small ones to attach the wire mesh to the walls)

* Hinges (I used 4 - two for the tops, 2 for the bottoms)

DIRECTIONS:
First off, set up your tent! If your tent or canopy doesn't already come with walls, you can easily make your own by using a tarp or other whether-resistant material, then using "zip ties" to secure them to the leg posts.

Place your 2 x 4's on the ground, lay them out as needed to create the 2 legs, the top and bottom. Measure and cut your 2 x 4's to the sizes needed for your setup.
Pre-drill all your holes for the basic wall construction, then secure using long wood screws.
Using a pencil or marker, add letters and lines on the 2 x 4's where each of the pieces "meet up". (A -- A, B -- B, etc...). This way, you'll always know which pieces go together, and your holes will always line up whenever you need to take it apart and rebuild for the next show.

Unroll the wire mesh on top of your wall construction, and cut it to size using wire cutters (make sure to wear gloves - this part can be dangerous!)
Attach the wire mesh to the top and sides of the 2 x 4's using small screws and those plastic "discs" (the discs make it more secure and more likely for the wire mesh to stay in place). There's no need to add these to the bottom... you can, but it's extra work for nothing :)

Paint the bottom part of the legs, since this is the only area a person would see after the fabric covers the rest.

When all three legs are done, you can attach the hinges to the tops and bottoms to connect them all together.

Once your three walls are up, wrap the fabric around the mesh, fold and staple it to the backside, making sure everything looks nice and tidy.

I found that the three walls stand up nicely on their own, but I added extra security by zip-tying the 2 outside walls to the top edge of the canopy posts.

Now that you're all done, use the curtain hooks to hang your paintings (one end is sharp, so it goes right through the fabric and hangs on the wire mesh). Use the "U" side of the hook to hang your artwork!

When disassembling my walls, I simply remove the hinges from the two outside walls, unscrew the mesh from the TOP of the wall's structure (leaving it connected to the side legs) then remove the top and bottom 2 x 4's. This way, all I need to do is roll up the two side legs with the mesh attached, which makes everything easier to store and handle.

I hope this proves useful for artists out there. I'm sure there are other ideas out there, but this one happened to work very well for me, not to mention how easy it is for me to assemble and disassemble - without needing much help!
If you find this helpful at all, please leave me a comment! And if you have thoughts on how it can be improved, send your suggestions! :)

My famous purse...

I was hoping for the day that my Birch purse would make it to the Etsy.com front page, and it finally did! I got a nice note from one of my customers telling me that my purse was being featured - how exciting!!!

I went to a local craft fair yesterday to shop for Christmas gifts and got inundated with questions about my purse (not this one, but one of my other models that I carry around). It seemed that everyone wanted one! I ended up giving away quite a few business cards - I wonder who will be the first one to purchase it!! :)

Black Friday... it's not a myth!
Well, after a few months of having my own storefront on Etsy.com, it finally happened... I sold an original painting, and a hand-bound blank journal... all in the same day!
I've sold journals and paintings in the past, but this is the first time that someone has bought a painting of mine online. I was more than ecstatic, and I'm sure my customers will be very happy with their purchases. Here's what recently sold on my Etsy.com shop...

Thank you to everyone who helps to support the "handmade movement". I personally made a pledge this Holiday season to buy ONLY handmade items... for both adults AND kids! You'd be surprised what you kind find out there, and you're helping the local economy at the same time.
